Raised bed gardening is a formed style of gardening where your soil is set at six inches to waist high,and framed with wood rock or concrete blocks and can be used for vegetable, flower, herb, or any other type of gardening you wish.
There are many good reasons, why you would want to build a raised bed in your garden. Raised beds are a fantastic way to grow, flowers, plants or even vegetables. Once the raised beds are built, they are easy to maintain, and you will see the rewards for years to come.
People often choose to use raised bed gardens, if they cannot dig into the ground for some reason. Often the soil is not a good growing base and plants will struggle to survive. Older people and people with disabilities will enjoy the benefits from raised beds as they can move in-between the raised beds with ease. Making a raised bed is a fantastic way to control the soil, and grow a vast quantity of plants in a very small space. You can control the temperature and moisture, meaning you can grow vegetables for longer as they are in a controlled environment.
To build a raised bed garden , you will need some basic materials and a minimum amount of knowledge. Most raised bed are made from treated wood as they are the easiest material to work with, but you can also use, stones, bricks or cement blocks. You will need enough pieces of wood to make the size of bed you require. You will also need, screws, nails and twine, plastic sheeting is also recommended to help control weeds. To build the raised bed is as simple as building a wooden box, cut the wood depending on how big you want your raised bed to be. They are usually 3 to 4 feet wide and 8" to 2ft high, but you can build it however big you want, there are no specific rules and measurements. Simply fix together using the screws and nails. Once your raised bed garden is built, then you will need to decide where to place it in your garden. Consider the amount of sunlight your bed will get and the area will need to be flat to ensure even watering. You will then need to prepare the soil where the raised bed is to be placed, you will have to dig at least a foot deep and then place the raised bed in place.
Your raised bed garden will need to be filled with ideal soil, try to use a combination of the soil from your existing garden and a mixture of peat and manure. This will make your raised bed rich and perfect to grow plants and vegetables. Once your raised bed garden is full of the soil mixture then, place small nails every 12" around the top of the wood, this act as spaces for your vegetables. Now you are ready to plant, choose your plants and vegetables wisely. Ensure you pick easy to grow things until your confidence grows and then you can progress to more complicated plants.
Once your raised bed is established it will look fantastic for years to come, every year the maintenance will become less and you can simply sit back and enjoy them. Modern gardeners are returning to older styles to grow plants and vegetables, and raised beds are simply the best way to do this.
