Pay attention to the size and shape, small and cute don't mean they will stay small. Watch how far from the house or walkway you are planting, you don't want the flowering shrubs covering windows or growing over walkways that will make it difficult to walk. Arborvitaes or ceders come in a lot of sizes, their needles are soft and flat and a very pleasant smell to them, and will grow just about anywhere. Junipers come in different shades of greens and gold and have sharp needles but will with stand colder weather well.
If your soil is acidic and there is light shade to full sun you might consider holly shrubs, they add great looks and give a great holiday appearance with their red berries. Other acid soil lovers that like shady areas and protection from winter winds are azaleas and rhododendrons. You will find them in large and small sizes that can work in the space you have, they require little care and will give you spring flowers.
