Most lilac shrubs have dark green heart shaped leaves. The flowers of the lilac shrub range from deep wine red, white, and light yellow. The flowers are in large clusters in late spring. Most lilac shrubs have that great lilac scent, but there are some that have little or no scent . The bloom of the lilac shrub is short lived, so to keep the scent you can plant several varieties that bloom at different times.

Choose the site for your lilac shrub carefully as they don't like being transplanted. They root easily, but may not bloom for several years after being moved. Lilac shrubs must receive full sun for great blooms and to be disease resistance. They prefer light sandy soil that is slightly alkaline and has good drainage, lilac shrubs can grow to be fifteen feet high and very wide, so be sure where you plant them there is space enough for there size. If you use them as a hedge plant them six to eight feet apart.

If you need to transplant lilac shrubs do it in the cooler period of the year, early spring before they leaf out. Keep them watered while they are getting established. To much nitrogen will cause lilacs to have lots of leaves and very few blooms. Use a little five-ten-ten fertilizer in the early spring if the plant seems to need a boost.
