Square foot gardening is the same as raised bed gardening, the difference is a grid with each section a square foot that is set on top of the raised bed,

 Square foot gardening has basic rules just as raised bed gardening, pick your spot where you are going to do your planting, Make sure it will receive at least a halfs day of sunlight and there is good drainage. Lay out your garden plan, as with raised bed gardening you will need to build boxes ( square ) to fill with your soil mix. Place box where you are going to put your square foot garden. Fill this box with your mix of soil, peat moss, and sand, now you will need to make your square foot grids to set on top of each box. Never, never walk on the soil you are planting in.

You will need to pick out the flowers, herbs, and vegetables you are going to plant in your square foot garden. You my have started these plants in the house or greenhouse. If you are starting your square foot garden from seed put two to three seeds per hole or the transplants in a small bowl type hole and water.

When its time to harvest, and the harvesting is done pull the grids up mix the soil with more compost replace the grids and replant with next crop. Square foot gardening is a simple way to garden.

The grids should be as the name implys square foot gardening build in square feet, each space is to be twelve inches by twelve inches. By planting in these squares you will be keeping the weeds down, and and you can plant many different types of plants, flowers, herbs and vegetables together in one box. Always keep your square foot garden box at least three feet apart so you my walk throw with out stepping on them. Boxes should be made out of untreated wood as treated wood could leak toxins into the soil which will sicken or kill your plants.

The soil mix should have good drainage, again this mix should be one third soil one third peat moss and one third sand. Now that you have built your box and grid filled the box with soil, you are now ready to start planting. Keep plants so that they barely touch to crowd out weeds and will lightly drip water to the soil. A good way to keep pests down with out using insecticides, you can order lady bugs, they will feed on other pests that harm your plants.
